In pursuing a Masters, my goal is to get as much experience as I can. As I evaluated the different programs (with different program lengths), I ultimately felt that MIDS was the best combination of coursework, electives for specialization, and practical application (both an internship and an extended capstone project). Additionally, during the application process, the Admissions team did a great job communicating during the admissions process and gave me the impression of a well-designed program!
What excites you about data science?
To be able to answer the "whys"! I am exiting a project management role where I was empowered to make impactful decisions on behalf of the US Government. There were definitely moments where I wish I had greater insight before I made a decision, but I encountered the limitations of both the system I operated in and my own ability. As a student, I always loved to ask as many questions as I could, and I want to continue cultivating that inquisitive spirit.
What research area are you most interested in?
I am interested in the process of the conversion from physical data to digital data to insights. Whether that is applied performance tracking systems into a sports team or incorporating LEAN manufacturing into a foundry; there is a current void in both gathering information as well as understanding the information after one acquires it.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I love sports! I'm a big Philadelphia sports fan (four for four, but lean more towards the Sixers and Eagles). I'm really looking forward to the sports scene at Duke. I also dabble in cooking, but probably like eating more!
What is one interesting fact about you?
I've been inside the reactor compartment of a nuclear submarine!
