Jonathan Mattingly is a professor of mathematics and statistical science at Duke University. He earned his BS in Applied Mathematics from Yale, studied nonlinear and statistical physics at ENS Lyon on a Rotary Fellowship, and completed his PhD in Applied and Computational Mathematics at Princeton in 1998. His research focuses on the long-term behavior of stochastic systems, including fluid dynamics, molecular dynamics, and Bayesian sampling. Since 2013, he has also led groundbreaking work on gerrymandering, helping to shape legal decisions in North Carolina and beyond. Mattingly has received numerous honors, including a Sloan Fellowship, a PECASE CAREER award, and fellowships from the IMS, AMS, SIAM, and AAAS. He was also recognized with the Defender of Freedom Award from Common Cause for his impact on redistricting reform.
