Dr. Peter A. Beling is a Professor in the School of Data Science at the University of Virginia (UVA), where he leads generative AI research at the National Security Data and Policy Institute. His work focuses on resilient, mission-aligned artificial intelligence, with expertise spanning large language models, reinforcement learning, cyber resilience, and trusted systems. Dr. Beling’s research explores the intersection of systems engineering and AI, supporting applications in national security, including mission engineering, test and evaluation, and predictive maintenance.
Previously, Dr. Beling served as Professor of Systems Engineering at Virginia Tech, where he was Director of the Intelligent Systems Division at the National Security Institute. He has also held numerous leadership roles at UVA, including Director of the Adaptive Decision Systems Laboratory and Director of UVA’s Center for Visual and Decision Informatics site. He holds a Ph.D. in Operations Research from the University of California, Berkeley.
