Jose Luis Moscoso
I was looking for an innovative program that provides skills in Data Management in areas beyond only finance or marketing. The interdisciplinary approach exactly matches my interest, since I also come from a diverse industry experience that I can leverage on to make the best of the program learning experience.
What excites you about data science?
As a networking engineer, I have seen the fast pacing evolution of infrastructure to connect people, and capture data. However, there is an increasing imbalance on the capacity of our leaders to take advantage of the enabled data, that also translates in inequalities and inefficiencies, among other terrible issues. Through the learning and sharing of knowledge in Data Science, I can promote initiatives to combat those issues and empower the future generations of professionals in my country, and region.
What research area are you most interested in?
In my most recent job, I have worked in the Oil and Gas industry. I have witnessed how the investments in extractive industries in South America have been declining, even though those industries provide the most important resources in the region. One of the most critical and increasing issues has been related to the arising of Social Conflicts. I want to investigate, through the use of Data Science, how to facilitate the negotiations supporting the arguments of each side based on real facts and not on political or personal interests.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I love running, swimming and playing with my daughter.
What is one interesting fact about you?
Even though I frequently travel on airplanes, I am still afraid of flying.
