MIDS is appealing to me for its well-designed curriculum. I seek to develop a deep understanding of the motivation and inner workings of different tools and their applications by taking the capstone project and interdisciplinary courses including statistical analysis, machine learning, and research design. The unique series of “Data Science Dialogues” will help me gain perspectives on how seasoned practitioners are leveraging data science techniques to solve problems. I also highly value the opportunity to be constantly inspired by cooperating with classmates coming from different backgrounds.
What excites you about data science?
The challenges that we still need to overcome. For example, certain niche datasets are not easy to gather. Therefore, we may want to develop new analytical approaches with less reliance on large datasets. With increased complexity and diversity, any human-generated data inherits cognitive and cultural biases. We may need to pay more attention to the data semantics and how the data is gathered. Finally, as the scale of data science exponentially increases, it is important for us to treat it rigorously to avoid data manipulation issues. Our current state of the industry provides the best infrastructure for data science, I would like to seize this opportunity.
What research area are you most interested in?
Leveraging data science to inform product innovation by gaining insights on existing, latent, and untapped consumer needs. My inspiration stemmed from learning how Netflix produced one of their most successful original programs – House of Cards. They proactively studied what customers would like to watch in the future, rather than merely making suggestions for existing content. By effectively combining data science techniques with domain knowledge, we will be able to add customer value and minimize risks associated with the new product release.
What do you like to do in your free time?
Playing the violin and listening to music. I also enjoy reading all kinds of books, spending time with family, and playing badminton.
What is one interesting fact about you?
I am a fussy eater. Coming from a place that adores spicy flavors, every meal without chilies is insipid for me.
